The Georgia football team won the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday night. The Dawgs haven't won a title in 40 years.

The 40 seasons are the end of the longest gap between championship seasons in football. LSU had the longest dry spell, with 44 seasons from 1959 to 2002.

The top 25 in 2022.

The 1980 college football season had some differences compared to the current campaign. There was no College Football Playoff. The Big 12 had eight teams instead of 10. Miami, Florida State and Penn State were independents. Pittsburgh was an independent and finished second in the final poll four years after winning the national title. The top two teams did not meet in the title game.

The SEC was still a force. Alabama was the top ranked team in the AP poll for six weeks. Herschel Walker was the key player on Georgia's title team and became a national name.

There was chaos. The final eight weeks of the season saw at least one top-four team lose or tie, and five different teams claim the top spot in the polls.

It was a long time ago. In the year 1980, here's a glimpse of what life was like.

The history of the Olympics.

The United States men's hockey team's upset of the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, will forever be remembered for their gold medal win.

The Summer Games were boycotted by 66 countries, including the United States, because of the ongoing Soviet-Afghan War.

We knew who the father of the boy was.

"The Empire Strikes Back" was the highest-grossing movie of the year. At the end of the film, Darth Vader was revealed to be the father of the Jedi.

Robert De Niro won the Academy Award for Best actor for his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull."

It takes a long time.

The game was first released in Japan and the United States. According to The Guinness Book of World Records, at one time the game was seen by 94% of Americans.

Walter Day, of Twin Galaxies, told CNN in 2005 that "Pac-Man changed the psychological profile of the average person." Doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housewives all found it acceptable to play a video game. The door was opened by Pac Man. It was as simple as playing a card game for them despite the fact that it was technologically advanced.

It was magic time.

The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Magic Johnson in 1980. He won an NBA title and took home the Finals Most Valuable Player Award that year.

In the sixth game of the finals, Johnson played center for an injured Abdul-Jabbar and had 42 points and 15 boards in the series-clinching victory.

Where was Nick?

He was at Ohio State in 1980. Eight years after his playing days at Kent State, Nick was coaching defensive backs. The team he was coaching started the season as the top ranked team in the country. The Buckeyes would lose three games that season.

Kirby Smart was 5 years old when Bear Bryant was coaching Alabama.

Who missed it?

Georgia beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the title. Not yet around to see the game were modern icons like Britney Spears, Serena Williams and Natalie Portman, as well as Oscar winners, and sports stars. All of them were born in 1981.
