“Aw, screw it”: LAPD cops hunted Pokémon instead of responding to robbery

The firings of two Los Angeles Police Department officers who failed to respond to a robbery in progress and instead went looking for a Snorlax in the augmented reality game was upheld by a California appeals court.

The California Court of Appeal ruling stated that officers Louis Lozano and Eric Mitchell were being recorded by a digital in-car video system when they decided to catch a Pokemon after not responding to a robbery. The board of rights found the officers guilty of multiple counts of misconduct, based on a recording that captured them playing a mobile phone game while on duty, and ignoring their duty to assist a commanding officer.

The city used the DICVS recording in theirDisciplinary proceeding and denied the protections of the Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act, according to Friday's ruling. A three-judge panel at the appeals court unanimously upheld the trial court's decision to deny the petition.

When there was a radio call to respond to a robbery in progress with several suspects at a Macy's in the Crenshaw Mall, there was a nearby patrol by Mitchell and Lozano. They told their supervisor that they didn't hear the call for backup at the mall, but the DICVS recording showed that they ignored attempts to reach them.

After communications made a second attempt to contact the petitioners, Officer Lozano asked if they should ask if there's a message. "It's up to you," Mitchell said. Whatever you think. I don't want them to think that we're not paying attention to the radio. "Aw, screw it," said Lozano. When their unit was called, the petitioners did not respond over the radio.

The officers turned away from the mall and went through the alley to the scene of the robbery.

Snorlax is at 46th and Leimert.

The hunt for a Snorlax began five minutes after the speaker said "screw it"

The ruling was explained.

"Snorlax" popped up at "46th and Leimert" according to Mitchell. "Oh, you know what I can do," said the man after he was told that "Leimert doesn't go all the way to 46th". I'll go down 11th and go up on Crenshaw. I know how to get to it. Mitchell suggested a different route.

The DICVS captured the petitioners talking about Pokémon as they drove to different locations where the virtual creatures appeared on their mobile phones. On their way to the Snorlax location, Officer Mitchell told Officer Lozano that there was a Togetic just south of 50th. Thepetitioners agreed to get the Togetic after Mitchell caught the Snorlax. Mitchell told them not to run away when their car stopped again. "Don't run away, I buried it and ultra-balled the Togetic before announcing, "Got him,"" said the man. Mitchell said he was going to try to catch it. This thing is trying to get me. Mitchell exclaimed, "Holy shit." He remarked, "The guys are going to be so jealous", apparently in reference to capturing the Togetic. Sergeant Gomez met the petitioners at the 7-Eleven where they agreed to end their watch. Mitchell said, "I got you a new Pokemon today, dude."
