A doctor slams 'fat bias,' saying a patient 'could have lost his life' because other doctors chalked up his rash and pain to obesity

A doctor said that a man with joint pain, body ache, and fatigue was probably overweight.

Dr. Mike diagnoses the patient with the disease after seeing him later.

Weight bias leads to poorer outcomes in medicine.

A popular doctor is speaking out about weight bias in medicine, sharing an example of a young man who he believes had undiagnosed Lyme disease, and that his symptoms went ignored.

The morbidly obese man had body pains and fatigue for weeks. The first doctor to see the man thought it was due to weight-related arthritis.

Varshavski thought the man was too young for that diagnosis. The patient was diagnosed with the disease after further investigation.

Varshavski says he believes the condition could have progressed to damage his heart and even lead to premature death if he hadn't been diagnosed sooner.

A lot of my patients suffer with their quality of life because they are morbidly obese. It's not right to blame everything that's happening without doing a proper history and physical.

The patient was given over-the-counter drugs.

Varshavski says that the patient was sent home after the first doctor's diagnosis to be treated with over-the-counter drugs. The man developed a rash after his pain intensified.

The patient went to an urgent care facility where he received a steroid according to his medical records. The patient told Varshavski that it didn't help the joint and muscle pain.

The doctor told the patient the most likely cause of his symptoms was his weight, even though the man returned to his doctor to report he wasn't getting better.

"If you look at the course of illness for this patient, there is more than one system involved, and that tells me something is wrong."

Varshavaski said that something was a disease. He used photos of the man's rash and questions about his lifestyle to piece it together. The man said that the patient's dog had recently gotten a tick. The ticks can transmit a disease.

The Western Blot is used to confirm a positive ELISA test, which is used to determine if a person has been bitten by a deer.

The man was prescribed an antibiotic to treat Lyme. The man's symptoms had disappeared after the tests came back positive.

He could have needed a hospital stay for IV antibiotics if he had progressed to late-stage Lyme disease. He could have died from a cardiac arrhythmia.

Weight bias contributes to poorer outcomes in medicine.

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a majority of Americans are overweight or obese. It is possible for clinicians to fall prey to false societal messaging that weight is a key indicator of health.

A study of more than 4,700 medical students across the country found that many of them had implicit weight bias, meaning they weren't aware of their negative attitudes toward bigger-bodied people, and explicit weight bias, meaning they consciously had more negative feelings when presented with photos.

Doctors may struggle to see beyond a patient's weight, and patients who have been scarred by weight bias may avoid seeking care if they are overweight.

Varshavski suggests patients confront doctors they think are over-emphasizing their weight, or find another provider.

He said that it was your right as a patient. Proper health outcomes can be achieved if the relationship between a provider and patient is strong.
