Starbucks Workers Union Wins Second Election In Buffalo Area

The federal labor board announced Monday that a Starbucks store in Western New York won a second union election, another sign of progress in the effort to organize the coffee chain.

There were three elections in the Buffalo area last year. The union, Starbucks Workers United, won one election and lost another, but the outcome was not clear because the union challenged the eligibility of certain workers to vote.

The agency determined after a ballot review that eligible workers voted 15-9 in favor of unionizing at the store on Genesee Street in Cheektowaga. The board doesn't have to grant the request for Starbucks to appeal.

The shift supervisor at the store said that they won their union after months of intimidation and anti-union meetings. I would like to see Starbucks come to the bargaining table to negotiate with us.

The final tally shows the union is two for three in its campaign so far. Starbucks Workers United, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has filed for elections at stores in New York, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Arizona and Washington state, though the board has not scheduled many of them yet.

The second win was celebrated on the social networking site.

January 10, 2022, is the date of the workers' union.

Starbucks has had union workers at some of its licensed locations for years, but not at its corporate-owned locations. The Starbucks workers who have recently unionized make up a tiny fraction of the company's US workforce of 220,000.

If a company drags out negotiations, it can be difficult for organized workers to bargain a first contract. Starbucks acknowledged the union's victory in the first election and promised to bargain in good faith, but it has continued to oppose organizing efforts at other locations.

During the union campaign, the company sent managers and executives to the Buffalo area to hold meetings. The company has denied breaking the law, despite union supporters accusing the company of illegal intimidation.

The company has petitioned the labor board to include more Starbucks stores in the union elections, a common tactic by employers meant to diminish the union's support in sympathetic stores. The labor board has rejected Starbucks legal efforts to stop the election in Mesa, Arizona.

The board ruling was called a victory by the union.

The union asked when Starbucks would respect the right of their partners to organize.
