I don't like when actors, directors, etc., tell lies to journalists and fans about upcoming projects. J.J.Abrams and Benedict Cumberbatch will likely be remembered for their promise that the actor wouldn't be playing the villain Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, while Andrew Garfield will be remembered for his constant assertions that he wasn't reprising his role as The Spider-Man.
In an interview with the Wrap, the actor admitted that it was a bit of a challenge but also enjoyable. There were times when I was like, "I hate lying." I keep framing it as a game because I don't like to lie and I'm not a good liar. I kept imagining myself as a fan of that character.
Garfield had been a fan of Spider-Man since he was a child, and he wanted the actor to convince him that he wasn't. I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was right. That is what I would want.
No Way Home had a few rumors and a couple of leaked photos, but it wasn't enough to make Garfield deniability, and he wasn't grossly insulting everyone's intelligence. I am glad he had a good time lying about a million times in 2021, since he would have been exhausted and miserable if he had done that.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is available on demand.
