GM finally agrees California can set vehicle emissions rules as it preps to scale EVs

The Clean Air Act gives California the authority to set its own emissions standards, and General GM said Sunday that it had recognized that authority. After President Joe Biden was elected, GM reversed its stance on the Trump administration's efforts to bar the state from enforcing its own rules for new vehicles.

The state of California will consider the company for purchases of fleet vehicles because of GM's recognition of the state's stricter carbon emissions standards. Other companies on the list include BMW, Ford, Honda, and Volkswagen.

California is the most populous state in the nation and contributes 14.8% of the country's gross domestic product, so being blacklisted from the state because of a cantankerous desire to continue producing cars with higher emissions would be economic suicide. GM did not immediately respond to the question of why the company decided to send the letter now and how it fit in with its broader strategy.

In a letter to the governor of California, the VP and head of global public policy for GM swore his loyalty to the state. Walmart was announced as the company's newest customer with a reservation of 5,000 e- delivery vans. FedEx increased its order from 500 to 2,000, many of which will hit the streets of Los Angeles first.

The California Air Resources Board received a letter from the OEM on Sunday that promised to speed up the roll out of zero-emission vehicles. Two more electric SUV models under the Chevrolet brand were added last week, which will join the two upcoming versions of the Silverado EV pickup. The company is introducing the Hummer EV SUV in 2023 and has started to deliver the Hummer EV pickup truck. The electric GMC Sierra is coming to market.

David Strickland, GM's vice president of global regulatory affairs and transportation technology policy, wrote a letter to Randolph that committed to ensuring affordability of its EV for low-income communities. It would involve improving access to charging infrastructure by providing pre-paid charging cards and creating partnerships to build infrastructure in disadvantaged areas.

As part of their pursuit of a zero-emissions future, GM is joining California in their fight for clean air and emission reduction.
