How often can you reuse KN95 or N95 masks — and how do you safely do it? What to know

Health experts recommend that people switch to N95 or KN95 face masks if they are concerned about the spread of the omicron coronaviruses variant.

Can these masks be used more than once?

Some experts say yes if it is done safely. Here is what to know.

N95 and KN95 masks should be used again.

Reusing N95 and KN95 respirators is not ideal because they are designed for a single use. Some experts think that members of the general public should be able to wear them a few times before they need to be thrown out.

It is possible to reuse masks if you store them in a paper bag for at least 48 hours.

If you store a mask in a dry bag, you can keep it out of the public eye for a long time.

The bag isn't actually sanitizing the mask, explained Dr. Jessica Shepherd. The process of keeping the mask from being contaminated and keeping a dry environment in order for the virus to not spread or stay on the mask is what the method is about.

It is recommended to have multiple masks on hand.

Dr. Assoumou told USA Today that if you have an N95, you should switch the mask every day. You can change them. If you have three masks, you could switch them around.

The chief of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Utah said in a post that he recommends rotating the masks and sitting them for a day before reuse. They cannot be washed.

In Arizona, the Department of Health recommends storing one mask per bag and marking who uses it. The bags should be thrown away or cleaned regularly. You can put the masks in the designated storage area.

Health care workers should not reuse their equipment.

During a previous shortage of PPE, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said health care workers could wear one N95 per day and store it in a bag for at least five days before another use. Health care facilities should no longer be using crisis capacity strategies as the availability of respirators has increased.

When to throw your N95 or KN95

The masks can't be used indefinitely. They will need to be thrown out eventually as their effectiveness declines.

The CDC said that if an N95 is removed and put back on, it weakens and stretches the straps, meaning they won't be able to create a tight seal with the face. The recommendation was to limit the number of times a mask is removed to five.

Experts told USA Today that it is important to look for signs that you need to throw your N95 or KN95 away.

If your mask is dirty or damaged, it should be thrown out, the Department of Health said. If you accidentally touch the inside of the respirator, you should throw it out.

The department recommends limiting reuses to five.

The CDC says you should wash your hands when you put on a mask. Don't touch the mask while wearing it and only handle it by the ear loops or ties.

There are masks and omicron.

Experts agree that masks made of N95 or KN95 are the best option if you are in a crowd. Public Health Insider reported that surgical masks may be the next best option.

Which masks are best for you? Experts have to say what they think.

A public health professor at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University said on CNN in December that soot masks are just facial decorations. There is no place for them in light of omicron.

The masks are not the same. N95s are certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in the U.S., but they are manufactured and approved in China. The general public is more likely to see KN95s. The two are rated with a high percentage of efficiency.

Some scientists say that people can transmit Omicron if they have a throat and saliva problem, but that it won't show up in their noses until after they've been bitten. The Omicron virus was detected in saliva from 29 people three days before their nose samples were positive for it. Rapid tests have a lower sensitivity than lab-processed tests, meaning they produce more false negatives.

A study published on Monday found that high levels of T-cells from common cold coronaviruses can provide protection against COVID-19. The study looked at levels of cross-reactive T-cells generated by previous common colds in 52 household contacts of positive COVID-19 cases to see if they went on to develop infections. "We found that high levels of pre-existing T cells, created by the body when it's exposed to other human coronaviruses like the common cold, can protect against COVID-19 infection," said study author Dr Rhia Kundu.
