‘Dexter’ Redeems Itself In Inevitable ‘New Blood’ Series Finale

Dexter has a new show.

It was Showtime.

Dexter and its famous "lumberjacket" finale, the culmination of several bad seasons after previously being one of the most beloved shows on TV in its early years, is the show that immediately leaps to mind.

The original writers and star returned to try and make things right with Dexter New Blood. They did that as of this weekend.

There are more to come.

The main problem with the original Dexter finale was that it never dealt with the core issue of the show, Dexter's secret getting exposed. The show never got closer to revealing Dexter's murder ways than the second season's Bay Harbor Butcher, and that faded by the end due to a bunch of bad Deb-based drama.

The writers were not allowed to kill off Dexter, even if that was where his storyline would lead, with the idea that he was too valuable of a franchise character to kill.

The show ended in a way that felt like it was supposed to, because both of the issues were fixed for New Blood.

Dexter finally meets his match, not going up against another serial killer, but his girlfriend, just a local cop who pieces together not just his most recent murder, but his entire plot of faking his own death and shifting blame to Doakes for being the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter is thrown into a tailspin where his only play is to simply run, because she figured it all out.

The problem? Dexter kills a cop on the way out so that his son can finally see that he has killed many innocents over the years to fit his own code. His "don't get caught" rule allows him to kill innocents if he chooses, even if he doesn't want to. Harrison executed his father and the chief allowed him to flee.

This seems like the only way Dexter could have ended, his secret exposed, and his own crimes catching up with him. Even if you can make the whole "vigilante" argument about his actions being for the greater good, there's always been at least some element of BS and justification about Dexter and his code, and it's easy to overlook the innocents who died as a result of his actions Dexter sees those faces in his final moments, and he might as well be. This feels like the only way this could end.

I hope Dexter is finished as a concept. I think it needs this kind of redemption, but I don't want to do a "Dexter Jr." series with Harrison. Let it rest. Not every idea has to live forever. It was a good call to come back to Dexter for one last ride with the people who made the show special in the first place. I am ready to let the character and series go, as a fan, I feel some sense of closure. Hopefully it is too.
