5 Superhero Movies with Delays as Bad as Morbius

You may not remember, but it was a movie. 3 was supposed to be out on May 1, 2020. James Gunn was fired from Disney in the summer of 2018, after he wrote about rape and pedophilia. Everything was thrown out of whack by that firing.

There was a complicated saga about the Guardians 3 for the rest of the year. While the cast rallied behind their original director, they had discussions about whether or not to use his script and who would replace him. The lack of a director caused production to be put on pause, and later, the director would be snatched up by Warner Bros. His full schedule kicked the Guardians further down the release schedule. The release date for the third movie in the series is now expected to be May 5, 2023, after the events of Love & Thunder and Will Poulter's Adam Warlock.

The movie community was in tears when it was announced that Morbius was going to be delayed. The next addition to Spider-Man's cinematic world is supposed to be a vampire, but it hasn't come to fruition for 30 Seconds to Mars. Sony has pushed it back many times in the hopes that it will be a success and that the Pandemic will not be as bad. The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home can be attributed to the recent delay.

The delays hit hard for the superhero genre. The lack of a MCU movie in 2020 caused several to reexamine their relationship to Disney's megafranchise. The universe of heroes at Warner Bros. are not clear on how films tie together.

We decided to look back at some of the most notorious delays that superhero movies have faced in recent years. Not all of them are tied to the Pandemic and not all are out yet, but they are all notable for how much their dates have changed.

Before Fox got snatched up by Disney, they had multiple X-Men movies in the can, but only the horror spinoff New Mutants and the reboot Dark Phoenix. The Mutants and Phoenix were supposed to release in the spring and fall of 2018, but Mutants flinched first and was kicked to February to avoid cannibalization at the hands of the sequel. Phoenix took its intended February spot because of its delay #2. The Fox acquisition caused another delay for Mutants, this time to April 2020. New Mutants was taken off Disney's release schedule for a short time, but was released in August 2020.

Disney was the final point of contact for Fox and the X-Men, so they were holding off on releasing both movies. Without a real attempt to market either film as the end of an era, and the general acceptance that these characters would be linking up with the Avengers and Spider-Man in a few years, they both ended up releasing to subdued responses from critics and audiences alike. The first X-Men film to fail theatrically, Phoenix, made $252 million, while Mutants only made $49.1 million.

The third film by the Mutants is awaiting them.

Wonder Woman 1984 was greenlighted by Warner Bros. after the success of the first Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot's superhero movie was pushed up a month to June 2020 because it was set to be released in December 2019.

The epidemic happened. 1984 was going to be released in August, then October, but Warner Bros. decided to jump to 2021. WB decided to release Wonder Woman on Christmas Day after the poor box office for Christopher Nolan's Tenet. 1984 was more than a mixed reception, it was its dual release strategy that would define it, one WB would adapt for their 2021 slate of films to varying degrees of success.

Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice after Man of Steel was released. The actor would have also written and directed a solo Batman movie during his time in the DCEU. The movie was titled The Batman two years after it was first confirmed.

Things have changed since then. The Batman was written and directed by Matt Reeves, who also wrote and directed the movie "Batman Begins", while Ben Affleck left Batman to go to rehab for his alcohol addiction. The movie was supposed to be out in June 2021. The movie was pushed to October because of the Pandemic and one of the reasons was because of Robert Pattinson testing positive. WB would later delay The Batman to March 4, 2022.

Like the Caped Crusader, it has been a journey to bring the movie to life. Several planned DC Extended Universe films that were supposed to happen never happened. Phil Lord and Chris Miller were supposed to direct the movie in February of 2016 but it was pushed to the following year.

Barry Allen's first solo movie had not yet been made. He was able to cross over with himself. With other writers and directors having left the film, it faced another road block due to Miller's schedule with the Fantastic Beasts films. The third movie in the franchise, The Flash, was going to be directed by Andy Muschietti and was going to be released in July of 2022. It was briefly moved up a month before the Pandemic hit. At the time of writing, the November 4, 2022, release of The Flash is scheduled.
