‘Dobie Gillis’ Star Dwayne Hickman Dies At 87

The actor, producer and director, who was best known for his role in the sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, died of Parkinson's disease on Sunday. He was 87 years old.

In 1939 and 1941, Hickman's first screen appearances were as an extra in films The Grapes of Wrath and Men of Boys Town, which featured his older brother. In 1942, Our Gang, Captain Eddie, The Hoodlum Saint, Faithful in My Fashion, and The Secret Heart were some of the early screen roles.

In the Columbia Pictures family-film series, Hickman played different roles, including the one in For The Love of Rusty and the Son of Rusty.

He acted in films Heaven Knows and Her Husband's Affairs as a teenager, and later appeared in The Bob Cummings Show and The Sun Comes Up.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis aired from 1959 to 1963. The pilot Whatever Happened to Dobie Gillis? was the second sequel, and the TV Movie Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis was the third.

After earning a degree in economics at Loyola University, Hickman returned to the screen in films such as How to Stuff a Wild Bikini, Ski Party and Cat Ballou. He acted in television series and toured in productions.

From 1977 to 1988 he was a programming executive at CBS. He directed several episodes of the half-hour comedies Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis and Designing Women.

In 1983, he made a brief appearance in the TV movie High School U.S.A.

He appeared in a number of films in the late 80's and 90's, including Murder, She Wrote, A Night at the Roxbury, and Clueless.

He co-authored his biography with another artist, "Forever Dobie: The Many Lives of Dwayne Hickman."

He was married three times. He married Joan Roberts for the rest of his life. Albert and John are the sons of Hickman.
