The Buffalo Bills needed a win against the New York Jets to get a second straight AFC East title. The Bills won the division at home for the first time in 20 years, despite the Jets keeping things close thanks to Buffalo's offensive struggles.
They have not won back-to-back division titles since 1991. The Bills will host a wild-card game next week after being the third seed in the playoffs. Buffalo is 2-0 at home in the playoffs under Sean McDermott, who has led Buffalo to the playoffs in three straight seasons.
The Bills have a four-game winning streak, tying their season-best.
The Bills' opponent is still to be determined after the New England Pats' loss to the Miami Dolphins. The Los Angeles Chargers will play the Buffalo Bills if they beat the Oakland Raiders on Sunday night. Buffalo and New England will meet in the playoffs for the first time in the Super Bowl era if the Raiders win.
Josh Allen threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs on the Bills' first possession against the Jets, despite being under a lot of pressure.
The throw was Allen's 12th touchdown of the season on the run, most in the NFL this season, and had a completion probability of 18%, the lowest completion probability on a Bills touchdown since the beginning of the season.
The Bills offense struggled after scoring in the first quarter. The unit looked out of sync because of miscommunications between Allen and his receiver. The special teams unit wavered. Haack averaged 33.9 yards per punt on seven kicks, but one only traveled seven yards because of a bad snap.
The Bills' defense kept them in the game, and they sacked Wilson eight times and allowed the Jets to convert just one of 12 third downs. The Bills have had at least five sacks in back-to-back games for the first time in three years, and they have eight sacks, their most in a game since 2011.
There are some positives for Buffalo coming off the win, even though there will be plenty to clean up for the playoffs.
The Bills' pass rush is in better shape heading into the playoffs, and the rushing attack has improved because of improved play from the Bills' offensive line. The Bills' running back has at least one rushing touchdown in four straight games, the first player to do that since Fred Jackson in 2011. Singletary has scored six rushing touchdown in his first 41 games, but he has scored five rushing touchdown in the last four games.
Allen went three straight games without a sack, the first time in his career that he has done that.
The Bills' goals are much more than winning the division. The big test is still to come.
