Another Entire Country Just Banned Crypto Mining

Less than a year after China announced it would crack down on big time mining, another country has followed suit.

Kosovo, located in southeastern Europe, has decided to ban mining after spending the last 60 days in a government state of emergency over an energy crisis.

The government imported electricity at high prices after the country's biggest coal-fired plant shut down. The Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli announced the ban on the virtual currency in order to alleviate the pressure.

The Kosovo Police has organized an action to discover and seize equipment for minimum cryptocurrencies. One person was arrested after272 of these kinds of equipment were seized. The action ended without any incidents.

The amount of energy used by the mining of the digital currency was more than the total of 159 countries. It has gotten worse since then, and there has been little progress on eco-friendly cryptocurrencies. The heat and energy pumped out by a local mining rig has gotten so bad that some lakes have been turned into hot tub areas.

Kosovo's ban makes a lot of sense, and the government doesn't seem to be slowing down seizures any time soon.

Svecla said that the actions will continue until the full implementation of the decision of the Parliament and the Republic Government.

Will the ban help alleviate the energy crisis? It is complicated because of the tensions with Russia and Ukraine, but it is at least a step in the right direction for both consumers and the environment.
