Josh Cavallo says 'hate never will win' after receiving homophobic abuse

Josh Cavallo was abused at the Victory's ground.

Josh Cavallo, the only current top-flight male professional footballer to come out as gay, says hate never will win after receiving homophobic abuse at a game.

The 22-year-old was yelled at by a group of people during the A-League game.

Cavallo said there were no words to express his disappointment.

He said it shouldn't be accepted.

"As a society, it shows we still face these problems in the future," Cavallo said.

We need to do more to hold these people accountable. Hate will never win.

I will not apologize for living my truth and who I am outside of football. To all the young people who have received homophobic abuse, hold your heads up high and keep going.

There is no place for this in the game.

Cavallo said that social media platforms are not doing enough to stop abusive messages.

Nathan Kosmina, the chief executive officer of Cavallo's club, said the side wasappalled by the verbal abuse they received.

A statement from the Victory said the club "strongly condemns this behavior" and would investigate the matter further.
