Democrats shared personal memories from the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot at a House event on Thursday. We watched a lot of these. We heard a lot of personal statements.
Schumer was within 30 feet of the insurrectionists. Had someone had a gun and two of them were blocked off the door, what would have happened? I was told that one of them said there was a big Jew. Let's get him. Two Republicans came up to me and said bigotry is against all. One of them said that they couldn't see you. I know some of them. I can talk to them. I can talk to them. You're in a different category. Our lives were saved by every struggle that slowed the mob. What would they have done to us? Bear spray? Do you want to tear us limb from limb? Kidnap or kill four members of congress? "We were walking along the tracks away from our meeting room to get away." I was proud to walk alongside all of you. I hadn't done that before. I sent a picture of myself with a bottle of Jameson to my children because I was worried they wouldn't be worried. I didn't realize that they were watching it on cable TV. FaceTiming them and seeing their faces, and feeling a concern about whether I was causing them more harm than good. I tried to assure them that I was okay. My son said, "We know what's going on." We can hear breaking glass. How can you say you're okay? It was like a dagger through my heart.
No Republicans spoke about the day's events other than Reps. Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
