Do you like scary movies? Where to watch every 'Scream' before 'Scream 5' hits theaters

There are certain rules that must be followed in order to survive a sequel. The original and the other sequels must be streamed immediately.

25 years after the events of Scream, the sequel is poised to reignite one of horror's most frightening franchises. It will feature the Woodsboro hometowns of series favorites, as well as a cast of new characters who are victims of a fresh Ghostface.

To fully appreciate the journey ahead, eager audiences should set aside roughly eight hours to binge the first four Scream movies. The horror genre was re popular after it waned in popularity during the late '80s. Even if Scream 3 and Scream 4 weren't as good, their tongue-in-cheek approach helped define satirization and criticism of the horror genre for years to come.

Here's where to watch every single Scream movie, and in chronological order, with some franchise history to boot. Happy haunting!

1. The movie Scream was released in 1996.

An all-time 'Scream' queen is Casey Becker. Miramax is a credit.

Shudder subscribers will tell you that Scream changed the game. There's more to this sales pitch than just saying "It's important."

The whodunnit was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, and is fun and crazy with a killer cast, script, and style that haven't lost their edge yet. It's one of the most re-watchable scary movies ever made. Those who watch a taste of horror's best and worst instincts in less than two hours will appreciate it.

Campbell is playing a likable final girl-type in a murder plot. When a masked figure with a penchant for horror movies starts attacking suburbanites in a southern California town, Sidney and more of Woodsboro's residents must fight to survive a night against their mysterious foe. Sidney and her friends' knowledge of horror movie survival can't save them from the villain known as "Ghostface."

The cast includes Matthew Lillard, Drew Barrymore, and more. David Arquette and Courteney Cox are the new stars of the franchise. If you're going to watch just one movie before Scream, then this is it.

You can rent or purchase the movie on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.

2. The second scream was in 1997.

A knife through a door. That's a classic. Miramax is a credit.

In Scream, Randy Meeks may have warned people not to say they'd be right back. The franchise returned less than a year after the original with a sequel from the duo.

The second film in the series follows Sidney as she goes to a college in Ohio, where she is still haunted by her face-off with two Ghostfaces. Stab is a horror movie series that has been made into another movie series, and an unsolved double homicide at a nearby theater has local police thinking of a killer.

When Dewey arrives on campus to check on Sidney, it's clear we're in for another harrowing Ghostface encounter. The meat of the movie is how the characters played by Jerry O'Connell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Laurie Metcalf, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett Smith, and more fare against this new enemy.

The first one did well and then some, but the second one is funnier and has a bigger budget. It's a toss up between the two, but you can assume that Scream 2 is more violent and funnier.

You can watch Scream 2 on Amazon Prime Video, as well as on other digital platforms.

3. The third and final film in the Scream series was Scream 3 (2000).

We were spending too much screen time at the fancy house. Miramax is a credit.

The low point of the series is Scream 3.

For more than a decade, Wes Craven directed the third and final installments of his previously masterful franchise. Many fans blamed the bloated story on screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who took over for Williamson. Scream 3 lacks the conviction of its predecessors. It doesn't honor the smarts or successes of the franchise up to that point, it doesn't show the knowing guidance of the first Scream sequel, and it can't seem to decide what it's doing. It's canon.

Sidney has become a recluse and is caught up with in California. Many of the murders in Hollywood were on the set of the upcoming Stab 3. The third antagonist of Scream starts off with a boring monotony of mundane kills, tiring chases, and needless retconning that's because they used an impossible voice change that mimics anyone the user wants.

It's understandable. The national conversation around violent media following the high school shooting in Colorado affected the production of Scream 3. There are some moments in it that are fun. It gives us more screen time with Sidney, Dewey, and Gale and is heavy on the comedy.

You can rent or purchase the movie on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.

4. The movie Scream 4 was released in 2011.

JILL. The killer is right there. Miramax is a credit.

The fourth film in the franchise will be the last one directed by Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015. The result is a perfectly passable flick that doesn't live up to the greatness of the first two, but is better than Scream 3.

Sidney is being framed for the murders of many Woodsboro teens. The real killer is being dodged by her cousin and her classmates.

There are red herrings and meta jokes about true crime obsessives and scary movies being re-made to death in Scream 4. It's packed with kills and gore, making it a new era of terror. Some people appear in small parts. The original characters' show is back with Sidney, Dewey, and Gale stealing the show. Dewey and Gale are married in this one and it's very fun.

If you've liked the others, you'll like this sequel, but only if you watch Scream 4 first. This is the last one.

You can rent or purchase the movie on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other digital platforms.

5. The sound of a scream (2022).

Good luck, girl. Miramax is a credit.

The movie should be called Scream 5 because of the co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and the writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. We are confused but excited.

We don't know a lot about what seems like a pseudo-reboot, but early reactions to Scream have been good. The synopsis states that a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.

That's pretty basic. The next Ghostface's victims are related to players in the original crime, according to the trailer. We can start to figure out how we think first-time Scream actors like Mason Gooding, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, and more fit into that puzzle. It's hard to say if this will be the end of the Scream series or the beginning of something new. Anything could happen with Sidney, Dewey, and Gale back.

The movie is only in theaters on January 14.

The TV Series: Scream.

If you can't make it to the theaters to see the movie, you can take solace in knowing there are some other movies you haven't seen yet.

MTV's Scream: The TV Series is a fun spinoff from the films that doesn't include any characters we know but does make use of the franchise's fantastic formula. The first and second seasons are connected, but the third season is completely different. Even if you're only watching 30 episodes, you'll still enjoy the jokes and kills.

You can watch the TV Series on the internet.
