19 dead, including 9 children, in devastating New York City apartment fire

The mayor of New York City confirmed on his verified account that there were ten adults and nine children who died in the fire.

The fire started in a building. There is a 19-story residential building in the Bronx. The fire was brought under control before 1 p.m., according to NBC New York.

Adams said during the news conference that the fire was going to be one of the worst he had seen.

City officials said at least 63 people were injured. At a press conference earlier in the day, New York City Fire Department Commissioner Dan Nigro said he anticipated a lot of deaths. Many of the victims suffered from smoke inhalation.
