Pete Carroll could be coaching his last game.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that the future of Pete Carroll is uncertain as the Seattle Seahawks play out the string on a disappointing 2021 season. The Seahawks are in their first losing season in a decade.
The disappointing record led to speculation that Russell Wilson could be moved, but Garafolo wrote that the Seahawks are not planning to move their franchise quarterback.
It's unlikely that both Russell and Carroll return in 2022, according to Adam.
Tensions regarding personnel and offensive scheme have led to a decline in the relationship between the coach and quarterback. Wilson wanted a more wide-open offensive system that would allow him to compete for the most Valuable Player award, while Carroll preferred a status quo of building around the running game, according to an investigative report published last February in The Athletic.
Wilson, one of the most media-savvy players in football, made his frustrations public in pushing for help on the offensive line and blasting schematic choices.
The trades that the Seahawks made to get guard Gabe Jackson and offensive head Shane Waldron did not lead to success. Wilson is struggling with injuries and the Seattle offense is ranked 17th in scoring and 23rd in yardage. His 51.7 QBR is the lowest of his career.
The Seahawks have to choose between a quarterback who is 33 years old and a coach who is 70 years old. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the two teams mutually part ways, with the possibility of the latter moving into retirement.
Seattle is 118- 73-1 in 12 seasons under the leadership of Pete Carroll.
