Three Men Sentenced to Life in Prison for Ahmaud Arbery Killing

Three white men were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a black jogger in Georgia in 2020. There is no chance of parole for two of the men. The judge sentenced Gregory McMichael to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Arbery. William Bryan will be eligible for parole after 30 years in prison. The men were convicted of murder.

Linda Dunikoski, the lead prosecutor in the case, asked the judge to deny parole for the father and son, saying they had shown a history ofvigilantism and hadn't shown they regretted their actions. She said that there was no remorse or sympathy from either man. Dunikoski wanted the judge to grant Bryan the possibility of parole because he had cooperated with investigators.

Walmsley pointed out that Arbery had been chased for five minutes while he ran from the men. The judge held a minute of silence to show how long that was. I thought from many different angles when I thought about this. Walmsley said that he kept coming back to the terror that the young man running through Satilla Shores must have felt. The family of Arbery argued for the maximum possible sentences to be given to the judge. Marcus Arbery's father said that his son was killed while he was doing what he loved.

The three men will appeal the verdicts. A hate crime trial is scheduled to start next month. Wanda Cooper-Jones has also filed a lawsuit.
