The Denver Broncos lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in their season finale in 2021. The Broncos missed the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.
Rapoport reported that Fangio's future was up in the air, but that Denver hadn't yet decided on his status for 2022.
In December, Fangio said he deserved to stay at his post for at least another season. The Broncos improved their offensive efficiency from 30th to 15th at Football Outsiders.
Any coach with a losing record in three successive years is bound to be on shaky ground, even if Fangio has the respect of the building. Fans could ask about his general fit as a head coach.
Steven Kriz is on the phone.

Fangio would be doing a good job if he were only the defensive coach. He is in charge of all phases. The bad OC was picked by him. He is stuck with the horrible ST coordinator. He didn't make the playoffs because he chose the limited veteran QB. He isn't a HC!

Fangio wasn't hired by George Paton, so the front office may not have felt as though they had to make a decision on his fate. If Paton was willing to trade Von Miller, a Broncos icon, then a coaching change was likely.
The hiring of a new head coach and the identification of a new starting quarterback are likely to go together in the future.
Drew Lock threw for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdown and seven turnovers in 14 starts, while Teddy Bridgewater threw for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdown and seven turnovers in 14 starts. The Lock experiment appears to be over because the 2015 Pro Bowler has a clear ceiling as a starter.
The Broncos haven't found a franchise quarterback since John Elway retired.
Nick Kosmider of The Athletic said in December that the most likely outcome was the organization targeting a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft. A trade for an established star like the Broncos did with Manning in 2012 isn't out of the question.
The Broncos have the draft capital and salary-cap space to acquire an elite quarterback and fit his contract into their financial picture. Denver will be interested in an All-Pro talent. It is a certainty. It's not certain if the quarterbacks are available.
The fans will be following Denver's coaching search closely, but they might not make a final decision on who will be the next coach until it is clear who will be in charge.
Fangio probably won't return to the head coaching ranks immediately, but he may not have to wait long for his next job.
CBSSports.com's La Canfora reported that he was a hot commodity as a possible defensive coach.
Several of the top head coaching candidates who are about to start making the rounds for interviews, league sources said, and is also coveted by several teams who do not anticipate making a head coaching change but would like to upgrade at their defensive coordinators spot, are Fangio."
The ball is Fangio's to decide if he wants to take some time off or stay on an NFL coaching staff.
