Sam has played in 25 one-day internationals and 33 T20s.
The call to solve the England's injury crisis was answered by Sam Billings, who drove more than 500 miles from the Gold Coast to Australia.
He was only 90 minutes away from leaving Australia for England's T20 series in the West Indies when he got the call to join the Test squad.
As a Covid precaution, he had to drive down the east coast of Australia.
"I thought it was a joke," he said.
I went to the Gold Coast airport to pick up a rental car instead of going to the airport to fly home.
Khawaja leaves England in a fight to save the Test.
Bairstow and Buttler have taken blows to their hands. They are waiting for the results of their X-rays, but they are available to bat in England's second essay.
In the absence of Buttler and Bairstow, Pope stood in behind the stumps.
Pope, a part-time keeper who has taken the gloves for England in one previous Test, held four catches.
Pope could keep in Hobart, though it is more likely that he will be the 700th man to represent England in Test cricket.
"It would be a very Sam Billings thing to drive nine hours to run the drinks," said Billings.
At the age of 30, you have a good idea of where your game is at. I'm ready to go if needed.
Since making his debut in 2015, Billings has played 25 one-day internationals and 33 T20s, often as a back-up to Buttler and Bairstow.
He left the BBL as the tournament's fourth-highest runscorer after making his first England hundred against Australia in 2020.
I've had to bide my time in order to get an opportunity or consistent game time. He said that he's done that too much and that he's enjoying his cricket.
I want to prove to myself and to other people that I'm good enough to get a place in the side.
I don't have any pressure on me if that opportunity arises. I have nothing to lose and it's something no one expected. Sometimes when you play your best cricket, that's a great place to be.
The England team will have to bat out the final day of the fourth Test in order to avoid going down in history.
"I know not in the same format, but you get confidence from game time, and that is what I've had," said Billings.
I want to have a positive impact on and off the field and give the guys a bit of a buzz. I'm very confident that my game is at the right place to fight any challenge thrown at me.
The journey began on Friday night and included an overnight stop in Coffs Harbour.
His drive continued at the crack of dawn on Saturday and he detoured to the city ofNewcastle to look at the beach and water there.
"It's been quit a long drive, I'm not going to lie," said Billings. People don't know how big Australia is. It's really large.
It's been a motorway through a lot of trees. It has been pleasant, better than the M25.
