The final eclipse of the 21st century was the December 4 solar eclipse. Male penguins use a special display to claim their territory and advertise their condition. One of the largest Adelie penguin colonies is located at Cape Crozier. Researchers have been studying the colony for 25 years. The total eclipse that happened in December of last year was about 80 percent total when seen at its maximum phase.

The annual show for planet Earth's northern hemisphere skygazers is named for a forgotten constellation. The shower is visible on the sky from within the old constellation. The Big Dipper is not far from that location. The Big Dipper is above Polaris in this frame, with the meteor shower to the right. The panoramic skyscape shows the Quadrantid meteors streaking through the night in the direction of the radiant. There are radio telescopes in the foreground. The source of the dust stream that produces the Quadrantid meteors was identified in 2003 as an asteroid.
