The parents of the Oxford school shooting suspect were locked up on $500,000 bond on Friday because the prosecution said they couldn't be trusted not to flee.
The prosecution said that James and his wife, Jen, left their home in Oakland County, bought four burner cell phones, drained their son's bank account, and hid out in an abandoned building in Detroit after the shooting.
The prosecuting attorneys and their defense attorneys went to a private video chat with Judge Nicholson as they challenged their bond. The parents of the teen accused of the fatal Oxford School shooting are James and Jennifer Crumbley. Judge Nicholson in Rochester Hills denied the couple's request for a lower bond.
Prosecutors said the Crumbleys took $3,000 out of the teenager's account and left him with 99 cents.
The Crumbleys asked a friend to bring them alcohol while they were in hiding, and they only left the building for a smoke and to hide their car.
The probable cause hearing for the teen accused of the Oxford School shooting will be held on January 7, 2022, in the 52-3 courtroom of Judge Carniak. The case will be taken to the circuit court.
The Crumbleys were going to have their bond lowered to $100,000 cash, but Karen McDonald disclosed these details to prevent that.
Four students were killed and seven others were injured in a shooting at a school. The couple bought the gun that their son used to shoot up his school. They said the teen bought it four days before the shooting.
The lawyers for the Crumbleys argued that their clients took refuge in Detroit because they had gotten death threats in Oakland County, and that they were planning to turn themselves in. The Crumbleys bought burner phones because their cell phones were taken by the police after the shooting, according to a friend.
The bond for the Oxford school shooting suspect will be reexamined.

McDonald argued that the couple showed no signs of surrendering, even though they were found with thousands of dollars in cash, burner phones, credit cards and gift cards when they were arrested in Detroit. She said that they didn't return their lawyers' calls.
The mother of the teen accused in the Oxford School shooting was isolated on a video screen as she and her husband were asking for a lower bond. Their request was denied.
"These are not the actions of people who wanted to turn themselves in," McDonald said. They didn't turn themselves in at the police station across the street from their hotel. They were able to stay in Oakland County even though they fled to another town.
McDonald argued that the Crumbleys have no ties to Michigan and that makes them even more flight risk. She said that the Crumbleys are in the process of selling their home and horses, and have been communicating with their families in Florida since the shooting.
The Crumbleys have to sell their home because it's not safe to live in Oakland County, according to the defense.
Mariell Lehman lambasted the prosecution for revealing personal information about the mom, specifically that she was having an affair while her son was out of control, at the bond hearing.
Lehman accused the prosecution of using the affair allegation to create conflict between the spouses.
Lehman said there was no conflict. There are no issues with the extramarital relationships we have with our clients.
Lehman said that the prosecution's claims that the Crumbleys did not properly secure the gun were false.
"In his journal, he explicitly states that he has to find where his dad hid the firearm," Lehman said.
The probable cause hearing for the teen accused of the Oxford School shooting will be held on January 7, 2022, in the 52-3 courtroom of Judge Carniak in Rochester Hills. The case will be taken to the circuit court.
Lehman argued that the parents had no idea that their son was torturing animals and that he kept a bird's head under his bed for six months.
Lehman said that the parents had no idea that their son had engaged in torturous behavior.
The parents could have stopped the massacre if they had paid more attention to their son, gotten him mental health treatment and told the school they had bought him a gun, prosecutors argue. On the day of the shooting, a picture of a gun and the words "The thoughts won't stop" were drawn on a math paper. Help me.
The drawing is from a filing by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office in the case of the parents of the Oxford High School shooting suspect. The drawing was made prior to the shooting.
