Spider fossil sheds light on Australia’s ancient rainforest ecosystem

By Chen Ly.

A spider fossil from Australia.

Michael Frese is a musician.

The fossil of a mygalomorph spider was found at the McGraths Flat, a fossil site in New South Wales, Australia. The area was dominated by rainforest for up to 16 million years.

Matthew McCurry, co-author of the book, says it is unlike anything that has been seen in Australia. The first set of legs is an extremely large spider.

The fossils of plants, insects and animals were found at the site and give researchers an insight into what Australia would have looked like during the time period.

Michael says that these are sites that preserve soft tissue.
