61% Of Americans Didn’t Go To A Movie Theater Last Year, Poll Finds

According to a new Gallup poll, more than half of Americans didn't go to movie theaters last year despite blockbuster releases like Black Widow and Shang Chi.

More than half of adults didn't go to a movie theater at all over the course of the year, while more than a third saw between one and four movies in theaters.

The average number of movies seen by adults in movie theaters in the U.S. fell in the last decade, according to a Gallup poll.

Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 saw an average of three movies, while people between the ages of 30 and 49 saw an average of two movies.

Before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a survey was conducted by Gallup, asking 811 adults across the United States.

Morning Consult's study showed that more people under the age of 40 were more confident in returning to theaters than older people.

The studies note that theater visits may be down due to coronaviruses fears and more competition from at- home streaming options.

18% of adults think they would be comfortable returning to the theater within a month, while one in five say they would be comfortable returning after 6 months.

The number is big.

$4 billion. Comscore, which analyzes box office metrics, says that the U.S. domestic box office brought in revenue of $1 billion for the year. The revenue was up more than 100% from 2020, but down more than 50% from pre-pandemic 2019.

Movie theaters tried to make a comeback from 2020's Pandemic-related closures, releasing more big-budget films. Warner Bros. and Disney decided to release some movies on their streaming services on the same date as movie premiere in theaters. AMC and Cinemark posted losses in their most recent quarter, but they also noted that theater admission was up compared to 2020.
