Amazon Shortens Paid Leave For U.S. Workers With Covid After CDC Changes Guidance

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its recommendations for self-isolation, and now Amazon is reducing paid leave for employees who contract Covid-19.

Amazon told employees in a notice that if they test positive for Covid-19 or were exposed to the coronaviruses, they will be offered up to 40 hours of paid leave.

The Journal reported that Amazon is allowing US workers to return to work after being isolated for seven days.

Walmart halved its paid leave for workers who contract with it this week, which could be a bellwether for other large employers.

The CDC halved the recommended isolation period for people who test positive for Covid-19 and are not showing any symptoms.

The Journal reported that the CDC does not recommend people to test after five days, and that Amazon employees don't have to give a negative Covid-19 test result to return to work.

Amazon had 10 days of paid sick leave for Covid-positive employees, in line with previous guidance from the CDC. Last year, some Amazon workers had trouble paying their bills. Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon, acknowledged that the process didn't work the way he wanted it to, as the company didn't anticipate a spike in demand for online orders.
