Disney Will Release Pixar's Turning Red Exclusively on Disney+

The era of day-and-date movie releases is over, but thanks to the rise of coronaviruses in the United States, it seems like Hollywood studios might be returning to releasing their movies exclusively on streaming services. Disney will be leading the movement if that is true, and Pixar's next film, Turning Red, will be available on Disney+ instead of in theaters.

This will be the third Pixar movie in a row to be released solely on the streaming service after Soul and Luca, and would almost seem vindictive if it weren't for the pandemic, which of course Disney cites as the reason for its decision. Disney+ subscribers around the world embraced Pixar's Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically-acclaimed Luca when they were released on the service, and we look forward to bringing them Pixar's next incredible feature film Turning Red, said Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment. Flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of the Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.

Domee Shi Bao, who won the Academy Award for her Pixar short "Bao," directed Turning Red, which is about a 13-year-old girl named Mei Mei who must deal with her domineering mother, school, relationships, boys, and more. The movie will premiere on March 11, but it is not known if it will be free for Disney+ subscribers or if it will be a Disney Premium release.
