The best gadgets we saw at CES 2022: The Verge Awards

This year, it was supposed to be in person. Hotels and airlines were booked by many outlets. After the all-digital affair of 2021, companies teased cool gadgets that would have made CES feel exciting again. 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 Some companies pivoted to digital booths, others canceled keynotes, and a few just withdrew. The show would end a day early. It is possible that the return to normal CES would never happen.

The news that came out of the Consumer Electronics Show got us excited. For the last two years, we have been ruminating on what the purpose of the show is. We said in 2020 that the show was a lot of show with not much substance.

We were surprised to find that the show was still capable of surprising and sometimes even delightful, after a very subdued CES 2020. We don't know what the show will look like in the future.

We can celebrate the very cool, and the very weird, and sometimes the just plain goofy gadgets that remind us of when we lived in the Nevada desert.

The Odyssey Ark can be used in portrait orientation.

The best in show.

The Odyssey Ark is a product of the company.

The computer monitor has gained a new appreciation in many people over the past two years. It makes working from home comfortable and productive because it allows us to play games from either our preferred consoles or a high-powered PC. It is often the center of a home office setup.

It is no surprise that a monitor is what captured our attention the most. The Odyssey Ark is a monitor. It is the combination of a number of trends in one package.

It is huge, and 55-inch screens are rare for monitors. It has a 4K resolution that is enough for sharp text and detailed imagery. It is aggressively curved, which wraps the screen around you, if you use it in the portrait orientation.

The Odyssey G9 is the largest curved monitor by a significant margin. It is less wide and larger than monitors like the G9. It arcs above the viewer's head in the demos, which remind me of how aTesla's windshield extends far beyond your line of sight.

It is easy to imagine the experience you can get with it, without having to deal with expensive goggles. I want to take two of them side by side.

The best laptop.

The ROG Zephyrus G14.

It was done by Asus. It did everything we asked it to do. We in the laptop sphere have been complaining about the lack of aWebcam for a long time, and finally, we got aWebcam on the Zephyrus G14, which is a daily driver for many remote and hybrid workers.

The RTX 3060 was swapped out for the Radeon 6800S. It would not be shocking if this device was the top-performing 14-inch gaming laptop on the market this year with the best battery life to boot, because it has the new Ryzen 9 6900HS processor. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio, fixing the only other complaint I have had about the Zephyrus G14.

We have given the Best Laptop of CES to the Zephyrus G14 for two out of the past three years, and the third one was the same thing but slightly bigger. I understand if you are frustrated by how predictable we are. This could be the best gaming laptop that has ever hit the market. The previous Zephyrus G14 models have spent months at the top of our best gaming laptop list, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and no webcam.

There are still a couple ways that could break my heart. They could put a high price tag on this device. Please do not do that to me. The new chips could be bad. I don't expect them to be bad. If they are even remotely good, this is the laptop of the year.

The best TV.

Sony A95K QD-OLED 4K TV.

It is not often that we see a new TV technology at the same time as actual products, but that is part of the excitement around the QD-OLED displays that are coming to TVs and PC monitors. It is not the company that is leading the charge for a QD-OLED TV. Not yet, anyway.

The A95K QD-OLED 4K TV will be available in 65 and 55 inch sizes. It will combine the brand-new displays with Sony's best-in-class TV speaker system. If QD-OLED is able to deliver on its promise, the new TVs could be better than the existing sets from Sony. That is no small feat considering how great the OLEDs are.

New tech is accompanied by a high price tag. QD-OLED is guaranteed to cost more than any 4K OLED TV on the market right now, and it won't demand nearly the same premium as something truly next level like MicroLED.

Will it be worth it? We will have to wait to see the A95K in person.

You can see how aggressive the curve is with a top-down view of the Ark monitor.

The image is of a phone.

The best monitor.

The Odyssey Ark is a product of the company.

I was going to write off the Odyssey Ark as a screen that was just like another one, but with a swivel so you could turn it on its side. I blame the company for that, because they only gave two pictures of the monitor to the journalists who were covering the show. The monitor curves like a scythe, which would be awesome if that were new.

I was wrong to lump it in with the Odyssey G9 because the pictures started coming in from the show floor. The reality looks like a cockpit, or a curved wall of surveillance monitors, that can turn into a single 55 inch curved 4K TV, one that can run games and many films at their preferred 16:9 aspect ratio instead of stretching them across an atypical 32:9 expanse of pixels. The dial on the back of the virtual monitors looks great, and it's also a great way to get work done.

The Odyssey Ark looks like it will be the ultimate monitor, even if it doesn't work out, because it looks like it will be cheaper than the $2,499 Neo G9.

BMW showed off a car that can be changed into various shades of gray using E Ink.

The image is of BMW.

The best concept.

The BWM iX concept car has E ink paint.

A concept is a sketch of a cool future idea. An execution is what makes a concept the best. There needs to be more. Even if its just a one-off that is more smoke and mirrors than reality, a concept needs to be at least a little tangible to get us excited. The same E Ink technology used in the iPad and the Pebble is used in BMW's "color changing paint". There was a car at the show that was white and black. You wonder when you will be able to get a car painted in E Ink. That doesn't mean it will happen. The display is still made of liquid. The stunning effect produced by this paint is toast if there is a bad hail storm or a ding in the Walmart parking lot. There is no word on how it would handle the heat. The stuff is still all in one place. Imagine a world where E Ink is good at color. Imagine being able to modify the paint of your car with your phone instead of going to a guy with a lot of stuff. That is cool. Alex Cranz, managing editor, doesn't mind being a little fanciful once and a while.

The Labrador was a robot that stood out at the show.

The image is of Labrador.

The best robot.

There is a robot shelf.

Normally, the Consumer Electronics Show has a lot of robot concepts, from dogs to bipedal humanoid vaporware to weird little balls with cameras attached. With so few people attending, there is less reason for companies to come up with robot ideas. The only robot that stood out was simple and practical and it has a better chance of becoming real than most of the concepts we see at the show.

The Labrador retriever is a shelf on wheels that is able to navigate around your house. It doesn't have lidar, but it can open a fridge and get you a beer if you put the beer on an accessible shelf. It uses off-the-shelf technology to help people with limited mobility move around their house. Labrador has set a goal to solve a real human need with technology that exists right now, instead of shooting for the stars and landing on its face.

The Vivomove Sport looks good and doesn't cost a lot.

The best Wearable.

The Garmin Vivomove Sport is a sport.

In recent years, the company has expanded its lineup beyond hardcore athletes. The Vivomove line of hybrid analog watches was too expensive for casual users and too casual for serious athletes. It was disappointing, considering how cool the hidden display is. The entry-level Vivomove Sport is great. It is a cute watch, affordable, and still gets you the bulk of the health and fitness tracking you need. It is best suited for casual users, but it feels like it has the right mix of features.

The Masonite door has multiple smart home gadgets.

The image is Masonite.

The best thing for a smart home.

The Masonite Smart Door is a smart door.

The Masonite M-Pwr smart door is all gadgets, and I love it. The smart door has everything you need to control the main access point at your home in one place. A video doorbell, a smart lock, motion-activated smart lighting, and door sense capability are all available. You don't have to change disposable batteries every six months.

It is not perfect, but it has a lot of potential and is a great idea. This is just the beginning. The M-Pwr is a collaboration between three companies to create a genuinely useful solution for the smart home. The creation of smart homes is dependent on collaboration and interoperability. You could say they matter.

You won't be able to buy the M-Pwr at Home Depot because it's only available for new homes. Front doors are expensive even without smarts. This type of solution is where the smart home is going. The home of the future will be built with sensors, power and connections.

The Chevy Equinox is a car.

There were a number of new EV announcements this year, including the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX, the BMW iX M60, and the aerodynamic Chrysler Airflow.

The award for best new EV was given to the Chevy Equinox, which was announced months before the show but didn't show up.

Most of the new electric vehicles that have been announced over the past few years retail for well over $50,000, making them seem like luxury items. It is worth noting that Mary Barra said the Equinox would come with a $30,000 sticker price.

It will take more than one company to turn all the cars and trucks in the US into electric vehicles. They can't all be sports cars. We need electric Toyota Camrys, electric Kia Rios, and electricMitsubishi Mirages. We need beaters, jalopies, and clunkers to go with our sports cars and Hummers.

The Chevy Equinox is a good car. Let's hope GM doesn't try to sell a $50,000 premium trim before the base model is released.

It's true that the company is doing NFTs now.

The image is of a phone.

Most of the time, it's the same thing.

NFT support on TVs.

There are a lot of good additions in the TV lineup, like the Frame's new matt coating, weird additions, and the new QD-OLED technology. The NFTs, which are known only to the company, are seen as a key part of the company's upcoming sets.

If it was just enabling the ability to view an NFT, it would have been an odd addition. It is the sort of thing that makes sense if you look closely. The Frame TVs have the feature of displaying art as a way to blend into the background, but what about the NFTs? But the company didn't stop there. The ability to browse and buy NFTs was added. A nice evening on the couch is like dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars on a pixelated JPEG using a TV remote.

The addition of NFTs to its announcements at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in the year 2022, is a classic example of the quintessentially SAMSUNG: big, flashy, weird, months late to a trend, and likely doomed to end up in the trash bin of other hype-chasing additions.

The best thing we could buy was.

Schlage Encode Plus has a door lock.

The opening show for the Apple event in the fall of last year had a Mission Impossible-style opening show, but at the end of it there was a locked door that the agent couldn't open. Kevin Lynch opens the door with an Apple Watch tap. The Schlage Encode Plus door lock could make it easy to live a dream of being able to open a door with an Apple Watch. It is the first deadbolt that supports Home Key. It has an integrated keypad for more unlock options and is good looking with various finishes.

Finally, a TV for smaller rooms.

The photo was taken by Chris Welch.

It was the best thing we've ever wanted.

The C Series is a 42-inch screen.

Since it released the not too big but not terribly compact 48-inch TV in 2020, we have been looking for a smaller flagship.

There are many reasons to want a smaller, yet still high-end TV. It's a dream of a lot of us at The Verge to use it as a gaming monitor. If you have the hardware to run it, the gaming experience on the TV feels smooth and silky because of the 120Hz refresh rate. That dream has always been out of reach.

You would want a 42-inch TV for more than just gaming. Some of us want a high-end TV that can fit in a small space or that won't dominate a living room, and we want one. It felt close but not like it was real, like the iPhone 11 Pro did before the 12 Mini came out. Will 42 inches fit that spot? There are a lot of people who are considering finding out.

The TP-Link router that moves its antennas is a cool trick.

The TP-Link is the subject of a Gif.

The best Gimmick.

The TP-Link AXE200 is called the Archer.

Does it matter which way you point the antenna? After years of fiddling and even relying on expert advice, I think it might be best to use a routers that does the work on its own. Even if the AXE200 never adds a megabit to download speeds, it looks cool because it has four motorized blades that seek out the best signal possible.

There is at least one legitimate reason to upgrade to the 6 GHz radio on the routers, since it is ready for the new 6 GHz radio. I will burn those motors out within a week if I skip this one.

The ColorSonic promises to make dying your hair easier.

The image is of L'Oreal.

If the price was right, we would buy it.

L'Oreal ColorSonic.

I bleached and dyed my own hair, despite the advice of my hair dressers. It left my bathroom looking like a Jackson Pollock painting. If the result was nice, that would have been fine. It was patchy.

That is the reason I am excited about the L'Oreal ColorSonic. Do you apply color by brushing a device through your hair? Even a dingus like me can do that. Is it possible to use replaceable cartridges that can be used multiple times? Sign me up.

I could go to a professional at the salon. The last time I went, I was quoted $600 and it was not a fancy place. Doing it at home is a pain, but it is also cheap. I would happily pay more for a device that makes the process simpler. The ColorSonic is set to launch under the L'Oreal Paris brand and is supposed to be the sort of hair care gizmo you can buy at Target. If the price was right, I would pay my hard-earned moolah.

Using a small, portable projector is less annoying thanks to the Freestyle projector.

The best thing we could buy was part 2.

The projector is from the SAMSUNG company.

At the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, there will be a new portable projector from the Korean company, the new Freestyle. It is small enough that you can take it anywhere. It is possible to use the Freestyle as a projector for your PC or laptop, or bring it on a camping trip, or stream it on your ceiling.

The picture size can be set to between 30 and 100 inches. The device makes sure you get the best image with auto-focus and auto-leveling. Since it runs the same platform as the company's smart TVs, you should be able to install a ton of apps on it.

The Freestyle is being made more than a projector by launching accessories that convert it into a smart light, as well as an accessory for plugging it into a light sockets for easy power.

The Freestyle is a fun-as-hell device. The hurdle it is facing is its price. It's too expensive for a fun toy and too cheap to cut it as a solid projector, so it's positioned in an awkward spot.
