Citigroup To Fire Unvaccinated Office Employees At The End Of January, Report Says

According to a memo sent to staff Friday, Citigroup will fire employees who don't get a Covid-19 vaccine by the end of the month, after it became one of the first large financial institutions to tell staff that vaccinations would be a condition of employment.

The company told employees in a message that they will be terminated at the end of the month if they don't take leave on January 14.

Employees who are eligible for year-end bonuses must agree to not pursue legal action against the company, according to the report.

A Citigroup spokesman said that more than 90 percent of the company is vaccine free.

In October, Sara Wechter, head of human resources at Citigroup, announced that the company would require employees to be fully vaccined as a condition of employment, citing President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate for federal contractors and the health and safety of its employees.

Forbes asked Citigroup for comment.

The company announced a policy last year and some employees criticized it. Ben Shittu, a member of Citigroup's HR Technology team based in Dublin, Ireland, posted a video on YouTube in November because he felt compelled to respond to the mandate. He pointed to Wechter's post about the mandate, which received nearly 700 comments. Some of the comments criticized Citigroup for failing to stand up for its employees and asking why employees who work from home need to be vaccine free, while others thanked Citigroup for keeping its employees and their families safe.

The key background.

Biden signed an executive order requiring federal contractors to make sure their employees are protected against the coronaviruses. A federal judge in Georgia halted the mandate nationwide in December after eight states sued to block it. If the order took effect, the judge for the Southern District of Georgia wrote that contractors could suffer an economic burden. The cases regarding the president's mandate for healthcare workers and for large employers were argued before the Supreme Court on Friday.
