The travel industry was relieved after the PM announced rule changes.

The relaxation of Covid testing requirements for travellers returning to the UK has led to a surge in bookings.

EasyJet said there were three times as many flights bought in the UK in the hours after the prime minister made his announcement than in the previous week.

British Airways Holidays said searches for holidays on its websites increased by 40%.

International arrivals and tourists returning to England will not need to produce a negative pre-departure test or self-isolate until they receive a negative test result from the first two days on arrival.

The aviation and travel industry argued that the Omicron variant had little public health benefit and were causing significant damage to their businesses.

The scrapping of the pre-departure test and the abolition of post-arrival tests for flow tests was a relief for the travel industry, according to the chairman of Abta.

He said that the news had prompted his firm to have its busiest day in more than a year, which was something he couldn't have imagined a month ago, when consumer confidence plummeted.
