The first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Lilies of the Field, Sydney Poitier, has died.

Poitier was 94 years old. His cause of death has not been determined.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bahamas, Fred Mitchell, said he was sad and happy when he learned of Poitier's passing.

He said that he was sad that he wouldn't be with us to tell him how much he meant to us, but that he did so much to show the world that those from the humblest beginnings can change the world. We have lost an icon; a hero, a mentor, a fighter.

Poitier paved the way for other black actors by choosing dignified and intelligent characters in films like A Patch of Blue and To Sir, instead of being stereotyped as an African American. The Defiant Ones was his first Academy Award nomination.

Poitier directed the comedy Stir Crazy in 1980 which was spun-off into a short-lived TV series. He made his directorial debut in 1972 with Buck and the Preacher, which he starred in with Harry Belafonte. He worked with Bill Cosby in three films.
