Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to interview for Jacksonville Jaguars head-coaching job

10:34 AM

Sources told Jeremy Fowler that the Jacksonville Jags are interviewing Leftwich on Friday.

Leftwich is in his third season with the Bucs and head coach Bruce Arians and his second season working with quarterback Tom Brady. Leftwich was the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in the year of 2018).

The Bucs are second in points scored per game with 23.4. They ranked in the top seven in those categories in 2020. The Bucs were ranked 27th for rushing yards per game.

The Bucs' offense was third in points per game and yards per game with quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Jags requested permission to interview Leftwich, but he said he wouldn't talk to them because he was focused on the Jets. He's interviewing two days before the Carolina game, which will be the final game of the season for the Bucs.

If the Rams lose to San Francisco on Sunday, the Bolts can move up to second place in the conference. If Dallas beats Philadelphia on Saturday and the Rams lose, they could drop to the fourth seed.

"I think it's disrespectful to the Jets and whoever you're playing that week when you're talking about things that really has nothing to do with Sunday's game," Leftwich said last week. I'm focused on the football game on Sunday. It's what it is, but it really doesn't mean anything at this point. I think it's disrespectful to the guys that you really work with every day, because it really doesn't mean anything at this point. That's how I see it. If I'm fortunate enough to be in that situation, I'll handle it, but right now I'm focused on the opponent we're about to play and getting us ready to play our best football.

It would be a return to his hometown for Leftwich if he were to be hired by the Jags. Leftwich is fourth in franchise history in passing yards and is the third overall pick in the 2003 draft.

The Jacksonville have requested interviews with Kellen Moore, Dan Quinn and Matt Eberflus.

Meyer was fired by the Jaguars at 1 a.m. He went 2-11 and made a lot of mistakes, including two videos of him behaving in a way that was inappropriate with a woman who wasn't his wife.

Josh Lambo accused Meyer of kicking him during warm-ups before an August practice. A statement released by a spokesman for Khan said that the owner decided to fire Meyer after the 20-0 loss in Tennessee.
