Philippe Coutinho will be on loan from Barcelona to Villa until the end of the season.

After agreeing to sign Ferran Torres from Manchester City, Barcelona were desperate to move on Coutinho.

A number of topflight clubs were interested in securing a deal for Coutinho, but his links with Villa manager Steven Gerrard, who played alongside him atLiverpool, and his desire for a fresh start elsewhere have seen off the interest.

'You're in for a long afternoon', says Gerrard.

It's a sign of Villa's determination to back the manager who they believe could be a real game-changer in the second half of the season.

Villa will be paying less than half of Coutinho's current wages at Barcelona and the deal is also understood to be cheaper than the one they struck to take Ross Barkley on loan from Chelsea last season.

While on a loan at a German club, he won the European Championship in 2020 and has been in the shadows at Barcelona.

He was a key figure when the Reds almost won the title eight years ago, and the chance to play with his former captain again appealed to a player desperate to reignite his career.
