Kieran Trippier: Newcastle complete £12m signing of Atletico Madrid and England defender

Adding on to the £12m price, the right-back from Atlante Madrid was signed by the team.

The England right-back signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the option of a further year.

The private jet that Trippier flew into on Wednesday was used to fly between the two clubs.

The club are paying £12m plus add-ons to make the 31-year-old the first signing under the Saudi owners.

Trippier made it clear he wanted to return to England when he decided to stay.

Trippier was signed by Eddie Howe from Manchester City in January 2012 after an impressive loan spell at Turf Moor.

I am very happy to be joining the team. I will give my all for the fans. I can't wait to get to work.

I would like to thank the fans and everyone at the club for the warm welcome I have received so far.

Trippier said that he knew he wanted to be a coach after working with Eddie Howe in the past.

The club's owners hope to add at least three more players this month as they try to keep the club in the top flight.

They are in last place in the league with two points from safety.

Trippier was a player for Eddie Howe.

"I am very happy to welcome him to the club," Howe said. I have followed his career and admired his abilities, so we didn't hesitate when the opportunity arose to secure him.

A lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window, which is clear in how quickly we have been able to complete this move.

Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol explains what Trippier's move might mean for the team.

Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol spoke to The Transfer Show.

It's great news for the fans.

"I think other players that have been contacted by Newcastle will now be looking at Trippier and thinking, 'Well, he's an England international, he's going to make that squad much stronger, he's improved their chances of staying up.' Maybe I should look at that as well. Maybe I should be up for it if he's up for it.

I think that it will be difficult for the team to sign other players, but I think they will, especially from what Pete Graves and Keith Downie are telling us. I think they will try to do loan deals as well, but it's a great start to the window for the club.

It's significant that they've done this early in the window, because we know they've got some big, big games coming up, and it looks like Trippier is 100 per cent committed and up for the challenge."

Pete Smith looked at what impact Trippier would have if he moved to the United States.

The 80 goals they conceded was the most ever recorded in a calendar year by a Premier League team. Only eight sides have ever let in more than 42 in the first 19 matches of a season.

The leakiness of the team has proved costly, with the team dropping more points from winning positions than any other team.

The picture is plain: this is a defence which badly needs reinforcements in January, and the fact that they have allowed more shots on their goal than any other team in the league this term is a sign.

Eddie Howe has not been able to improve that department since he took over from Steve Bruce.

Trippier was coached by Howe in the Championship for two seasons. Trippier has gone on to become one of Europe's top right-backs, reaching a European final with Spurs before winning La Liga with Atleti Madrid, where Diego Simeone's coaching has improved his defensive skills.

Trippier's creativity from crosses and set-pieces has made him a favourite of England boss Gareth Southgate, who turned to him at key moments throughout the team's run to the Euro 2020 final last summer before handing him the captain's armband for the World Cup.

Trippier will add leadership and experience to the backline. A transfer that bolsters their hopes of survival is something that will need to be strengthened.
