Moderna CEO says people may need a fourth Covid vaccine jab this coming fall as the efficacy of the current booster likely wanes over time

Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, said people may need a fourth vaccine shot in the fall of 2022, to boost their protection against COVID-19.

Bancel said that current boosters are likely to protect people through the winter due to a surge in the Omicron coronaviruses variant. Their effectiveness will probably decline in the months to come.

Bancel said that he expected the booster to not hold up over time.

He said that people with underlying health issues may need boosters every year.

Bancel's comments come as the Omicron variant of the coronaviruses sweeps across the world, spurring governments to push for booster shots.

Bancel said that they believe first that the virus is not going away.

Israel is giving fourth COVID-19 vaccine doses to people over 60. According to the Prime Minister, a fourth dose of the vaccine increases the amount of the vaccine in the body by five times.
The company said in a letter to shareholders that it shipped 800 million vaccine doses.
