Clinton Portis was sentenced to six months in federal prison and an additional six months home confinement after pleading guilty to health care fraud.

Several players, including Portis, took part in a scheme to cheat a healthcare benefit program for retired football players. He was paid about $100,000 after making false claims.

A group of 15 former players, including Joe Horn and Carlos Rogers, made false reimbursement claims from the NFL's Health Reimbursement Account.

The Department of Justice wanted 10 to 16 months for Portis, but the final sentence was not as severe.

The DOJ explained the scheme to the players involved.

Portis went to trial but his case ended in a hung jury. He pleaded guilty and agreed to pay his fines.

The former running back was a two-time Pro Bowler while he was with the Denver Broncos and Washington Football Team. He helped the Miami Hurricanes win a national championship in 2001.
