British Tabloid to Pay Meghan Markle Only $1.35 to Settle Years-Long Legal Battle

A three-year-long legal battle has come to a halt and a tongue-in-cheek win for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Mail on Sunday, the parent company of the British tabloid, published excerpts from a handwritten letter she wrote to her father.

After threatening to bring the case to the UK Supreme Court, the duchess settled her case with the Mail for a sum that will be paid on January 9.

Associated Newspapers will pay a confidential sum to the author of the letter that was reprinted without her permission and possibly cover part of her legal costs if the court orders it.

The Mail lost its appeal of a judge's ruling in favor of the woman, but she said it was a victory for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what's right. This win is precedent-setting, but what matters most is that we are now collectively brave enough to change a tabloid industry that makes people feel bad and profits from the lies and pain that they create.

The low sum backs the claims that she was trying to change the tabloid industry, not necessarily getting money from the legal battle.

The courts have held the person responsible, and I hope that we all do the same. She said that it is not from your personal life. It could be you tomorrow. These harmful practices don't happen once in a blue moon, they are a daily fail that divide us, and we all deserve better.

On December 26th, the outlet carried front page statements about losing the case in order to comply with the settlement with the Mail.

The legal costs of the duchess are thought to be over $1 million.
