CDC Finds Vaccinated People Rarely Die From Covid — Unless They Have Risk Factors

According to a study released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who die from Covid-19 have multiple underlying health conditions, and that vaccines work.

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine will be given to a 102-year-old New York resident on January 14, 2021.

The CDC looked at more than 1.2 million fully vaccine-vaccinated adults in the US over the course of a year.

People with underlying health issues are more likely to face a severe Covid-19 outcome than other people.

All 189 patients with severe outcomes had at least one risk factor like age or an underlying health condition, and almost all of the patients who died had four or more risk factors.

People who werevaccinated were less likely to get a severe outcome, and people who took monoclonal antibodies were not at risk.

The findings are in line with a CDC study from September that found Covid-19 vaccines were 98% effective at stopping hospitalizations in adults 18 to 64 but only 80% effective for seniors, and a peer-reviewed December study that found vaccines waned in effectiveness for seniors after the coronaviruses' delta variant

The study found that Moderna vaccine recipients were less likely to die, be admitted to the hospital or suffer respiratory failure than those who took Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson's coronaviruses vaccines. Moderna's vaccine is more effective at keeping recipients out of the hospital, possibly because it contains larger doses.

The authors of Thursday's study said that people who face a higher risk of severe Covid-19 due to age or health conditions should not only get vaccine, but also receive vaccine booster shots. The vaccines are still effective at stopping severe illness in general, but they could be less effective for some people as new virus variations emerge and months pass since people took their initial doses. The push to distribute booster shots has grown more urgent since the coronaviruses new omicron variant overtook the United States last month. A booster dose of vaccine could make it less effective at preventing omicron infections.

78.5% of the time. According to CDC data, there is a share of Americans ages 5 and older who have been fully vaccined against Covid-19.
