The smart home kicked into high gear this week at the Consumer Electronics Show, with new products for every corner of the home making their way onto the show floor. We have covered the most promising products in separate articles, but we have added in a few other noteworthy launches and announcements.

Interoperability was the dominant theme. The smart home could be the year it finally grows up, moving from a collection of shiny gadgets that provide mostly single-point solutions towards the whole home interoperability that has been its promise.

We barely saw any machines. Instead, companies like Masonite and Moen came up with solutions that combine disparate products and services to create a smarter home. Mitchell Klein of the Z-Wave Alliance said that they have a connected home. In five years, we will have truly smart homes.

Matter is a new smart home standard that wants to make all connected devices in the smart home talk to each other regardless of who made them. We will have a deeper look at what is new there and why it matters later this week.

There are new smart home gadgets and gizmos worth knowing about from the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show.

Bosch has a portable solution for smart security.

The image is of Bosch.

Bosch has a mobile security assistant that can monitor for break-ins, as well as measure air quality and temperature. The Spexor uses air pressure, noise, and motion sensors to detect an intrusion and alert you to changes in air quality. It can run on battery power for up to three weeks and can work with an eSIM card. This could be useful for camping or RVing, or for monitoring a hotel room or other place you are staying temporarily. We like that it can be used for more than just air quality when something bad is going on. There is no information on when it might come to other markets, but it is currently available in Germany for 250.

The Ring Glass Break Sensor is a device.

The image is of a ring.

Ring Alarm has a glass break sensor that it has finally caved in to. Ring Alarm users have been clamoring for a dedicated device for this purpose, as they have been able to call on the power of the Amazon.com voice assistant, using an echo speaker. The Ring Alarm Glass Break Sensor can detect the sound of glass breaking up to 25 feet away, if someone breaks a window to get into your home. It costs $40 and will be available for pre-order on February 16th.

It is not all we hoped it would be, but there is now another smart smoke alarm option. The new Kidde Smoke + CO Alarm with smart features is $90 and can be found at Home Depot and Kidde.com/smart. You can use the Kidde app to alert you to any alarms in your home. You can use the app to connect nuisance alarms to Amazon and/or Google voice assistants from the app. There are no other smart home integrations that use voice to check alarm status. The HomeKit integration with Kidde's RemoteLync system was teased at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but seems to have fallen by the wayside. When you add a Kidde alarm to an existing system, it will be smart because it is hardwired with a backup battery.

Can thread solve the problem? Eve thinks so.

Eve is the image.

Can you follow this thread?

This week, companies announced new products that use the Thread protocol, which is a key protocol in the upcoming smart home standard Matter.

Eve's first Thread-enabled smart blinds went on sale this week. The MotionBlinds start at $400 per shade and can be ordered through any Coulisse reseller. TheBlind Motions will be compatible with HomeKit and Apple's voice assistant at launch.

Schlage has announced the first smart lock with a Thread radio. The Thread radio supports HomeKit over Thread, and the Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt is the first Apple Home Key lock. This article has more.

The Wemo Smart Plug, Wemo Smart Light Switch, and Wemo Smart Dimmer will be Thread versions later this year.

HomeKit can now be used as a Thread border.

The Thread border will be made up of the Shapes, Elements, and Lines products from the company. Border routers are used to bridge the gap between Thread and other products. Light panels are useful and can be found in border routers, unlike the traditional white plastic boxes. The update will be in the first quarter of 2022. HomeKit-enabled Thread-based products, such as the Eve Room or Eve Energy smart plug, now have the ability to act as border routers, thanks to the fact that the light panels are now capable of doing that. If you want, you can create a Thread network without an Apple Home hub.

Aqara will release a new version of its motion sensor and door and window sensor with Thread technology in the second half of 2022. Aqara has products that work with HomeKit, Amazon and Google Home. The company will push an update to its M2 and M1S hubs that will support Matter. The standard will allow compatible connected sensors to connect to other Matter compatible devices.

The S7 MaxV Ultra cleans its own bottom.

The image is called Roborock.

Please keep it clean.

The robot vacuums that can mop have been disappointing. They drag a wet rag around your floor, which you have to clean, dry, and replant, and then refill the tiny tank. At the Consumer Electronics Show this week, two new products were announced that want to change that. We are closer to the Rosie the Robot dream with these fully automated cleaning and mopping and vacuuming machines.

Sonic mopping and an automatic mop-lift are included in the new Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra. The empty wash fill dock can be used to wash the mopping cloth and refill the tank with water, as well as emptying the vacuum and cleaning the dock, alleviating the need for manual maintenance. The S7 MaxV Ultra is coming in the second quarter of 2022.

The Deebot X1 can self-empty and self- clean.

Ecovacs.

Ecovacs has designed a docking station for its Deebot X1 OMNI bot vac that can clean the mopping pad and refill the water tank while also emptying the bin. The Deebot will go around any rugs and miss the carpet. You will have to manually remove the mop to vacuum the rug. You can tell the XI OMNI what to do without using a third-party smart speaker with its onboard voice assistant. YIKO is a natural language processing technology that takes direct speech commands so you can tell it to start, stop, and where to clean without using a phone or speaker. The Deebot X1 OMNI will be available in March and April for a suggested retail price of $1,549.

The Z-Wave 7000 is 250 percent greater in range than the Z-Wave Plus 500-Series, making it a good option for a garage or shed door. The Home connect is a traditional and contemporary style.
