Scotland scraps pre-departure travel tests and PCRs on arrival

All four UK nations are aligned because of the updated testing restrictions for international arrivals in Scotland.

People travelling to Scotland from abroad who are fully vaccined will no longer need to take pre-departure Covid tests, and will also no longer be required to self-isolate on arrival until they have received a negative result.

They will need to take a test on or before day two in the UK if they want to take a test on January 9.

Anyone who tests positive for a test will need to take a confirmatory test.

The new measures have been taken up by Wales and Northern Ireland since the UK government introduced them for England.

Pre-departure Covid tests, the requirement to self-isolate and mandatory PCR tests were re-introduced in December in a bid to stem the spread of the Omicron variant, but authorities say they are now less necessary because Omicron is the dominant strain in the UK.

The cabinet secretary for transport said that it was necessary to protect public health in Scotland due to the rapid spread of Omicron.

It is sensible to review the measures currently in place because Omicron is the most dominant strain in Scotland and across the UK.

We understand the impact of the restrictions on staff and businesses in the travel and aviation sectors, and these changes show our commitment not to keep measures in place any longer than necessary.

People still need to be very careful when travelling and to remember that things can change very quickly, as both our and other countries' COVID-19 requirements can change at short notice.

People should make sure they have travel insurance, check their booking terms and conditions, and make sure they comply with the latest regulations for the country being visited.

The update was welcomed by all of us in the Scottish travel sector, according to Mike Tibbert, president of The Scottish Passenger Agents' Association.

He hopes that the restoration of confidence in international travel will help the entire Scottish economy.

A road map for four nations is needed to ensure a stable future for Scottish travellers and the recovery of the Scottish travel industry.

The update was welcomed by the president of Barrhead Travel as January is typically the travel industry's busiest booking period.

She said: "These costly tests added a financial burden to many who were simply looking to unite with loved ones over the festive period." The changes mean that travel testing is more accessible and affordable.

There is no place for differing travel rules in the UK. We hope that all travel updates will move in unison as we look ahead to a strong recovery in 2022.

There is no doubt that the changes will boost customer confidence and will be welcomed by every area of the travel industry. Consistency and simplicity from all governments will be key to restoring the industry and reassuring travellers.
