President Joe Biden blamed the ex-president for the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building and decried how the rioters held a dagger at the throat of America.
The one year anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol was marked by President Joe Biden.
The Associated Press.
Biden recalled what Americans saw on January 6, but noted how Trump sat in the White House and did nothing.
Biden said that Trump has a "bruised ego" and "can't accept he lost" because he values power over principle.
The president hit back at Trump, saying the mob that took over the Capitol was acting for one man and not for America.
Biden said that American history is at an "inflection point" and called on Americans to "step up" and be "firm, resolute and unyielding" in their defense of the right to vote.
The 2020 presidential results are not proof of fraud, Biden said, and that the only way for Republicans to win is to suppress your vote.
Biden said that Trump was a "defeated former president" and that he was looking for an excuse to cover the truth.
Are we going to accept political violence as a norm? Are we going to allow election officials to overturn the will of the people? Are we going to be a nation that lives in the shadow of lies? Biden said something. We can't allow ourselves to be that kind of nation.
Chief critic.
In a statement responding to Biden's speech, Trump continued to make false claims about election fraud and criticized Biden's comments as political theater.
What to watch for.
The Senate has been unable to pass voting rights legislation due to opposition from Republicans and moderate Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin. If Republicans don't support voting rights, the Senate will vote on abolishing the filibuster by mid-January, according to Schumer. That would allow a bill to pass with only a simple majority rather than have to garner Republican support, but would also require support from Manchin, who is so far still skeptical about backing the proposal.
Americans still blame Trump for the insurrection.
Schumer is threatening to vote on changes to voting rights.
