The first step in the comeback of the star goaltender is a professional tryout contract with the Providence Bruins.

The unrestricted free agent underwent surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in his hip. He is expected to start for Providence on Friday. After his conditioning stint, he is expected to sign a contract with Boston for his 15th NHL season.

The Bruins have gone with a goalie tandem of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark, who signed a four-year, $20 million free-agent contract last summer.

If the veteran goalie couldn't return from his surgery, Ullmark was seen as the replacement, but the Bruins have been happy with the progress of Rask.

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said after a practice this week that he looked like the part. You don't know how it will go with surgery. He put the work in after getting through it. He wants to rehabilitate as quickly as possible.

Boston's career leader in wins is Rask. He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender in the year of 2014, and was a finalist for the award in 2020. He played in two Stanley Cup Final games for the Bruins, leading them to the title in 2013 and 2019.
