The number of coronaviruses infections in the bloc on Wednesday was a new record, up from nearly 900,000 on Tuesday.
The number of new cases in the bloc has tripled since the last week of December, and is likely due to the fact that there are more cases in the month of January.
France reported a record 332,000 new cases on Wednesday, the highest of any country in the bloc and the second highest in the world.

France had 189,000 and 137,000 new cases, Italy and Spain had 189,000 and 137,000, and the U.K. had 195,000 new cases.
The omicron variant of Covid-19 was tearing through Europe before it was even a wave. Since then, a string of countries have announced record numbers of daily Covid-19 cases as the omicron variant surged alongside the delta variant, with many introducing a flurry of new restrictions to try and contain the outbreak. Germany is set to debate similar requirements as Austria plans to implement mandatory vaccinations. The backlash was sparked by France's president, who said that his administration's coronaviruses restrictions were intended to "piss off" the nation's vaccine holdouts. The rules, which have now been approved by parliamentarians but await a Senate vote for final approval, require anyone over the age of 12 to show proof of full vaccination to enter many public spaces. The negative Covid-19 test is no longer an acceptable alternative. Similar requirements have been implemented by Italy.
