The Cop26 climate conference was attended by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The tree is new to science and has been named after Leonardo DiCaprio.

The scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens wanted to honor the star for his help in saving the rainforest.

The tree, which has been given the official name, Uvariopsis dicaprio, grows only in the forest known for its incredible diversity.

He was important in helping to stop the logging of the Ebo Forest.

The plans to open up the Ebo Forest for logging horrified scientists.

The 'dicaprio tree' grows in one location.

It is home to the Banen people and has an array of unique flora and fauna.

International experts wrote a letter to the government about the importance of the animal and plant species. The issue was picked up by the actor, who posted to his millions of followers.

The forest has yet to be officially designated a national park, but the government revoked plans to allow logging.

"This could be a stay of execution," Dr. Cheek said.

The "dicaprio" tree is the first plant new to science to be named by the scientists at the Kew.

The tree has glossy yellow flowers that grow from the trunk. It is a member of the ylang ylang family and is critically rare.

The ghost orchid is growing in darkness.

A pink lily from the same forest, an insect-trapping wild tobacco plant found in Australia, and an orchid from the island of Madagascar were some of the plants and fungi named by the scientists and their partners last year.

Several of these new species are already extinct and many are threatened by climate change.

Three of the 16 new species of orchids found in Madagascar are thought to be extinct in the wild. The forests have been chopped down to grow plants for Geranium oil in Europe. A new Cape primrose is at risk from copper mining.

The tobacco plant can catch insects.

Protection from extinction is very difficult until a species has a scientific name.

The list of show-topping discoveries from the year 2021, is a reminder that this is the last chance to find and name unknown species before they become extinct.

He said there are thousands of plant species and millions of fungal species that we don't know about. "This natural habitat that they're growing in - especially forests, but other habitats too, is increasingly and more rapidly being destroyed by us humans without knowing what's there."
