Police used Google Maps to track down a mafia fugitive who was on the run for 20 years

A wanted Sicilian Mafia fugitive was tracked down using Street View.
The news was reported by La Repubblica.

Italian police traced the convicted murderer to Spain. The prosecutor told The Guardian that police saw a photograph of a man who appeared to be Gammino standing outside a grocery while looking at Street View.

The deputy director of the Italian anti-mafia police said that the investigation used Street View to locate the man.

The restaurant that had a photograph of Gammino dressed as a chef on its Facebook page was nearby.

"We don't spend our days wading through maps to find fugitives," said Lo Voi.

There were many investigations that led us to Spain. He said that they were on a good path with the help of the maps.

In 2002 and 2003 a life sentence for murder was served by Gioacchino Gammino, who escaped from a prison in Rome. La Repubblica reports that he was arrested on December 17th.

The man is in custody in Spain. The police hope to get him back to Italy by the end of February.
