Instagram is finally testing the return of the chronological feed

The chronological feed is going to be brought back. The good news for fans of the algorithmic curation is that we have a first look at how it will work.

Adam Mosseri shared a video on social media explaining the feature and showing how it looks.

He said that in the future there will be three different feeds in Home, which is currently non-chronological. Home is where we rank content based on how interested we think you are in each and every post to try to make the most of your time.

He explained that Favorites will be a "subset" that you can modify to keep a closer eye on posts from certain users you don't want to miss. Following is a feed of posts from accounts you follow in chronological order by time posted. What a concept!

It's possible that Tweet has been deleted.

Mosseri noted that the Home option is going to have more and more recommendations over time. What is the translation? You don't follow accounts that post in your main feed. If the Explore page is a guide, I'm looking forward to the recommendations that are backsliding into gross Infographics and month-old TikToks, no matter how much I try to make it show me dogs and meme.

The users who have spent years begging for the chrono feed have been listened to. Mosseri says that they're testing it now and over the next few weeks. Mosseri said in his video post that the three view options feature will be rolled out in the first half of the year.

Mosseri said it was important to him that people felt good about the time they spent in the app. One of the best ways to pursue that goal is to give people ways to shape the photo sharing site into what's best for them.

It's a nod to parent company Meta's reputation for making people feel bad, whether it's research showing the app can make teenagers' mental health struggles worse or Facebook's algorithm actively prioritising content that made people angry.

If they can add a chronological option to the News Feed, we'll be getting somewhere.
