A Chicago mom says before schools were abruptly closed almost all of her child's classmates had to quarantine due to an exposure on the first day of classes

Chicago schools were closed on Wednesday after the teachers' union voted to move to remote learning.

It is not clear whether public schools will be in person or not.

Parents told Insider that being in the dark about school procedures is frightening.

Chicago schools closed for the day on Wednesday after the teachers' union voted to shift to remote learning, and now parents are unsure if classes will be held in the next few days.

Insider has learned that parents of students in the Chicago Public Schools are stressed out because they don't know if there will be classes. It's not clear if classes will be in person or remote. They are unable to plan their days because of the uncertainty. They said that the prospect of in-person learning is frightening.

The mother of three children in the Chicago Public Schools said she kept her third- graders home on Monday when schools reopened after the holiday break. She said that there was a COVID-19 exposure and her child's 30 other classmates who showed up had to learn remotely the next day. On Tuesday, her third-grader showed up to school, and "it was a total of her and one other student in the classroom", she said.

She and another child were in the school. She told me that her teacher had to go out for lunch so she had to have lunch with a whole classroom. She is being exposed to another group of students just for her to have a lunch break.

The spread of Omicron has made it difficult for schools to conduct in-person learning after the winter break. The highly contagious variant of the coronaviruses has led to a surge in cases, worsening staff shortages that have plagued US school systems as schools shifted from completely remote to hybrid or in-person learning environments.

A district spokesman told Insider that the Chicago Public Schools has a teacher shortage. On January 3, the school system had a teacher attendance rate of 82%, leaving administrators scrambling to cover classes. There is a search for substitute teachers.

The spread of the variant alarmed teachers. On Tuesday, the Chicago Teachers' Union announced that it would vote for all public schools in the city to return to remote learning, arguing that classroom conditions are unsafe for children and faculty.

"To the parents and guardians of this city, we want you to know that when your children are in our care, we put their well-being and safety first," the statement read. We fight for our children like we are our own.

The union's position is contrary to what the city officials are saying. In-person learning provides better educational benefits for children and less stress for parents who are forced to look after their kids during the day, according to the Mayor.

On Wednesday, the teachers were locked out of the digital classrooms so as to not do remote learning.

Just waiting until the last minute is not acceptable.

While there's a significant viral threat, a social worker who works from home says she'd rather her children learn remotely. The school district seems to be operating on a whim because she hasn't been informed of the plans.

"When the positivity rate numbers go up, they need to take precautions to just have the remote learning until the numbers can go down," she said. "Just waiting until the last minute is not acceptable."

Valeisha Manning, a mother of three children who attend Chicago Public Schools, said that parents don't know what's happening until just hours before school starts. The school district told her that it would be closed on Wednesday. The time at which parents are notified of the next day's status was not immediately responded to.

It's inconvenient if you don't know whether classes will be remote or in-person, because parents have to make arrangements to pick up equipment so their children can learn from home.

Each of her three children would have to have their own Chromebooks. Other parents wouldn't be able to do that on such short notice.

"There are parents who can't go and pick up their devices," she said.

Manning and Rachael both said that it can be scary for parents to send their kids to school if officials decide on in-person learning.

Manning understands that they need to be part of their peers for social development. There's no social development that comes to a dead child or a sick child.
