Megan Rapinoe, a member of the U.S. women's national team, blasted Carlos Cordeiro for his "caveman levels of misogyny" as he confirmed plans to run again for the post he resigned from in disgrace two years ago.

The US Soccer Federation's response to the equal pay lawsuit filed by the USWNT was deemed sexist by sponsors and players and led to the resignation of the president.

He confirmed on Wednesday that he will run for the job in March.

According to sources, Cordeiro was eyeing the position after receiving the support of some of the U.S. Soccer's voting members.

Rapinoe asked if he resigned because he embarrassed everyone or because he was under pressure.

In recent months, members across our federation have approached me with their concerns about the current direction of U.S. Soccer, which is why I am running for president.

He will run against Cindy Parlow Cone, who replaced him when he resigned.

When the Development Academy was abruptly shut down without discussion or warning, the youth landscape was thrown into disarray. Extreme budget and personnel cuts have made it harder to rebuild for the future. The U.S. Soccer leadership has not resolved the lawsuits that have been facing the federation.

The USWNT filed a lawsuit while Cordeiro was president.

The federation argued that the women had less "ability" than their male counterparts because of their physical attributes. The filing argued that it was not a sexist stereotype.

Some of U.S. Soccer's most high-profile sponsors criticized that. Coca-Cola said it was unacceptable and offensive, and Volkswagen said it was "disgusted".

The legal strategy was criticized by players from the men's and women's teams.

Rapinoe said in 2020 that they felt that those were some of the feelings that they had for a long time.

He stepped down because he didn't have the chance to fully review the filing in its entirety before it was submitted, but he would have objected.

In his campaign platform published on Wednesday, Cordeiro wrote that he had a personal responsibility to help resolve the lawsuit, and that he would be stepping down.

"I will make it a priority to reach a settlement with our women's national team players, who have made extraordinary contributions to our federation, inspired fans around the world and who deserve equal pay," Cordeiro wrote. Major investments have been made in our women's teams by U.S. Soccer in recent years. I think we have an opportunity to resolve our differences.

The USWNT's lawsuit was dismissed in May 2020 after the resignation of Cordeiro, and the players have filed an appeal. In March, the appeal will go to oral arguments.

The U.S. failed to bid to host the Women's World Cup, but Cordeiro criticized them in his announcement.

When he was president, he said he would bid for it. The U.S. Soccer organization has not said if it will bid for the 2031 Women's World Cup or not. The federation has not made a final decision on the bid, according to a spokesman.

The deadline for the U.S. Soccer presidential candidates was early Wednesday morning.

In August, Parlow Cone said she would seek reelection.
