In an address to Justice Department employees, Garland said prosecutors will continue to work at record speed and scale in the midst of a PAIN and are still pushing for more public assistance.
More than 725 defendants have been arrested and charged in relation to the storming of the Capitol, including 325 who have been charged with felonies.
Over 300,000 tips have come in from the public, Garland said, while more than 5,000 subpoenas and search warrants have been issued, and investigators have reviewed 20,000 hours of video footage.
17 trials are set to begin in the coming weeks and months for defendants who have been charged with attempting to obstruct Congress.
Garland said that the Justice Department was committed to holding all January 6 perpetrators accountable, regardless of where they were that day. Wherever they lead, we will follow the facts.
The key background.
The address Garland gave was one of several planned events to commemorate the riot last year, when a mob of Trump supporters attacked police and forced their way into the Capitol to disrupt the counting of Electoral College votes affirming President Joe Biden's win. There will be a prayer and moment of silence on the House floor at noon, as well as lawmakers sharing their account of the attack at the Cannon Caucus Room at 2:30 p.m. Biden is expected to say that former President Donald Trump is responsible for inciting the attack.
The Justice Department was one of the first federal entities to take action after the attack, with numerous arrests being made and defendants being charged in the days following the attack, which included many of the most visible rioters.
Biden will call out Trump's responsibility in his speech.
Among those arrested after the Capitol Riot were Patrick McCaughey.
