William Merry Jr., 63, pleaded guilty to the theft of government property during a virtual hearing held by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The first Missourian to be charged in connection with the January 6 riot is his niece, Emily, who has a plea agreement hearing scheduled for Monday.

According to the Star, Merry is said to have taken a piece of a sign that designates Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office suite as less than $1,000.

Merry was guilty of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds, but his other charges were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.

He was charged along with another St. Louis resident, Paul Westover, who was also charged with breaching the Capitol.

According to court records, several people identified Merry from the video footage, which showed a man with a grey beard, red cap and red bandana on his neck, and a woman in sunglasses.

He will be sentenced to a year in jail, followed by a year of supervised release and a $100,000 fine for damaging the Capitol building.

The cost to replace the nameplate was estimated to be $870.
