Out of 17 ships in total, the cruise line is canceling at least some sailings due to ongoing travel restrictions.

Sailings on the Norwegian Pearl are only canceled through January 14, while those on the Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Spirit are only canceled through April 9 and 23, respectively.

A passenger told Local 10 News that the Norwegian Getaway voyage out of Miami was canceled due to "covid related circumstances." A separate cruise out of Miami was cut short after 50 crew members tested positive for Covid-19.

The stock price of Norwegian was down more than 3% on Wednesday.

Cruise travel was suspended in the summer of 2021 due to concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus. CNN reports that officials in some Caribbean islands and other ports have refused to let ships dock because of Covid-19 cases, as the highly transmissible omicron variant has taken hold and spurred new outbreaks. The number of reported Covid-19 cases exceeds 10% of the people on the ship, which is the threshold for a CDC investigation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC protocols dictate that it will look into things like vaccination rates aboard the ship, but ships are still allowed to sail. The agency warned travelers in December that they should not travel on cruise ships.

The CDC recommends against cruise travel.

The CDC is investigating 86 cruise ships with Covid-19 cases.
